How we chose
We started from the eighteen mobile mechanics Google Maps shows across Telford. Each business must first meet our basic checks: it is who it says it is, it is trading today and can be reached, and anything it must hold by law is in place. Seven firms met all three. What customers say counts most toward the score, then qualifications, then whether the firm has traded two years or more and whether its cover is stated, then pricing clarity and website detail. All evidence is dated September 2026.
How to hire
A mobile mechanic owns the jobs that travel well: diagnostics, servicing, brakes, batteries and tyres at your home, workplace or the roadside. Heavy work such as engine rebuilds, welding and anything needing a lift belongs in a workshop, and several firms in this round will collect the car when that is the case. The annual test itself cannot happen at the kerb: only an approved centre showing the blue sign with three white triangles may carry it out, and the car needs its test by the third anniversary of registration, then every year after [5].
There is no licence a mobile mechanic must hold, so check the voluntary marks instead. Search the IMI Professional Register by the individual's name or the business name to see whether the person touching your car keeps their training current [1]. Then type your postcode into the Motor Ombudsman garage finder: its Service and Repair Code covers mobile mechanics as well as garages, commits them to open pricing and invoices that match the quote, and gives you a complaints route if the work sours [2] [3]. Citizens Advice gives the same counsel: use an approved outfit with a clear complaints procedure [7].
Trust My Garage lists independent garages under a code approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, with thousands of members nationwide [4]. If your car runs on gas, check the conversion on the DriveLPG vehicle register and tell your insurer about it before you book: the approved-installer scheme closed to new installers at the end of August last year, and the site now points you to installers approved before that closure [8].
Get the quote in writing before the van rolls, and make it itemised: labour with the hourly or fixed rate behind it, parts with the brand and whether they are original or aftermarket, the call-out fee and how far it stretches, the arrival window, and whether VAT sits on top. Ask what the warranty covers on labour and on parts, and how long each lasts. An accredited outfit should already work this way: the code behind the Motor Ombudsman badge requires transparent pricing and invoices that match quoted prices [2].
When the work is done, check the invoice against the quote line by line, then keep it with the service book, the MOT certificate and any diagnostic printout: the next buyer or the next mechanic will want the paper trail. Old parts are yours to ask for, and a decent mechanic expects the question. Pay by card where you can, take a receipt for cash, and never pay the full balance before the car is fixed and started in front of you.
If the repair fails or new damage appears, go back to the firm first with the invoice and photos, and give it a chance to put things right. If that stalls, an accredited firm's complaints procedure is your next step, then the Motor Ombudsman where the firm carries the badge [2] [3]. Citizens Advice sets out the same ladder for any garage dispute [7].
Pricing
As of autumn 2026, booking averages from a national quote platform give a starting picture: a mobile diagnostic test averages about £52, an engine-management-light visit about £64, and the average mobile repair booking about £82 [9]. These are averages with parts often on top, so treat them as the middle of the market rather than a promise.
Batteries and tyres are usually fixed-price jobs: a mobile battery replacement averages about £197 fitted, and mobile tyre fitting about £126 [9]. Brakes run wider: a motoring organisation reports front pads near £128 and rears near £121 from July 2026 booking data, with front and rear together typically landing between £150 and £700, and discs adding £150 to £250 on a small car or £200 and up on a larger one [10]. The test itself is capped: the most any station may charge for a car MOT is £54.85, with no VAT on the fee [6].
Four things move the bill: the car, since prestige badges and large wheels mean dearer parts and longer labour; the parts, since original kit costs more than aftermarket; the clock, since evenings, weekends and roadside rescues carry a premium over a booked driveway visit; and the distance, since many outfits add a call-out fee for the trip. Servicing has no single going rate here because none of the ranked firms publishes one: expect a fixed quote for an interim or full service and ask exactly which filters, fluids and checks it includes.
Ask whether every figure includes VAT before you compare two quotes, and get the scope in writing: which jobs, which parts, the arrival window, what changes the price if the mechanic finds worse than expected, and the warranty on labour and parts. The quote, the invoice and any printouts stay with the car [2].
Red flags
Offers to carry out the MOT itself anywhere except an approved test centre.
Quotes a price on the phone without asking for the registration, mileage or symptoms.
Will only take cash and offers no written invoice for the work.
Cannot say which business name will appear on your invoice.
Finds extra faults mid-job and starts fixing them before you agree.
Promises no warranty on labour or on the parts it supplies.
Pressures you to agree on the spot because the price expires today.
The bottom line
For most drivers, start with the fault rather than the firm. If your car runs on LPG, Mobile Automotives and LPG is the clear first call, with fixed prices and Shropshire-wide cover. For anything else with the car stuck at home or work, DAW Mobile Mechanic pairs on-site servicing with the price agreed before work starts.
Match the rest to the job: R&S Autos where you want to see past work first, Elite where one number must cover repairs and recovery at any hour, either tyre outfit for a flat outside garage hours, and OBD_Pal for a warning light on a prestige car. Then get the quote in writing with labour, parts and VAT shown separately, and file the invoice with your service records.
