How to hire
Start by matching the cleaner to the job. Check the trade register before you book. Members have completed professional carpet and upholstery training, passed the examination that follows it and supplied insurance documents, and each listing shows its membership level [2]. Only registered members may use the NCCA name or logo, so if a van or website carries the badge, look the firm up in the directory rather than taking the badge at face value [2].
For wool or delicate fabrics, say so in your first message. Wool carpets need gentler chemistry and slower passes than synthetics, and a cleaner used to them will say which method it will use and why. In this round, extra credentials appear only as statements on firms' own websites, so treat them as a question about training rather than proof, and ask what course sits behind the claim. If the answer is vague, get a second quote from a firm whose training is on a public register.
Get the quote in writing before anyone unrolls a hose. It should name every room, plus the stairs if they are included, the cleaning method, what pre-treatment and stain work the price covers, whether stain protector costs extra, how long each room stays out of use, the arrival window and the total. Most firms in this round publish no prices and quote per job after a call or visit, so compare two or three written quotes on the same list of rooms. Treat a firm figure given sight unseen on a stained or wool carpet as a question, not an answer.
Confirm cover and terms while the quote is still just a quote. Ask for the firm's public liability insurance details in writing and keep them with the quote, and for larger or commercial jobs ask for a recent local reference you can check. On the day, agree the walk-through before the machine is switched on: which stains may not fully lift, what is being moved and by whom, and when each room can be used again.
