How we chose
We started from the almost forty car-wash and valeting names shown across Telford. Trade memberships were sourced from the Professional Valeters and Detailers directory, each firm's own website and platforms such as the Detail Directory [1]. Each business must first meet our basic checks: it is who it says it is, it is trading today and can be reached, and anything it must hold by law is in place. Eleven firms met all three. What customers say counts most toward the score — the star rating itself, since beyond a small handful of reviews volume adds nothing — then qualifications, then trading history and whether cover is stated, then pricing clarity and website detail. All evidence is dated early September 2026.
How to hire
Match the service to the state of your car first. A drive-through or hand wash keeps a lightly dusty car fresh. A full valet adds the interior: vacuum, glass, trim and boot. Detailing means machine work — decontamination, polishing out swirls, then wax or ceramic coating to protect the paint. Correction and coatings cost several times a valet and take hours or days, so only book them when the paintwork needs it. When you enquire, say the make and size, the condition inside and out, and whether you want mobile, studio or drive-in.
Car valeting has no mandatory licence or register, unlike gas or electrical work. The trade body that matters is the Professional Valeters and Detailers association, a not-for-profit body that lists members in an online directory [1]. Listed members have had their insurance checked, with expiry dates shown on their profiles, and approved members have passed its multi-step approval process [1] [2]. Autogleam, this round's leader, lists trade membership on its own website; for most other firms here no scheme membership could be sourced. Search the directory for the business name rather than taking a logo at face value.
Check the record before you book. Search the trade directory for the name [1], look up any limited company on the Companies House register to confirm it is active [6], and read customer reviews on more than one site. A live company record and a consistent name, address and phone number across the listing, the website and the register all point the same way. If the only trace of a business is a social-media page with messages as the booking route, slow down and confirm the basics first.
Get the quote in writing with the scope spelled out: exactly which exterior and interior work is included, whether seats get a shampoo or a wipe, and whether any machine polishing or coating is included. It should state the price for your size of car, surcharges for heavy soiling or pet hair, the appointment time, how long the car is needed, and what happens in bad weather for mobile visits. Ask what the mobile valeter needs from you: parking space, access to the car and keys, and a contact number on the day.
Ask for public liability insurance in writing and check whether VAT is included, since the standard rate is a fifth on top where it applies [3]. A deposit to secure a slot is normal for busy studios; full payment in cash before the work starts is not. Treat an outlier quote, far above or below the rest, as a question rather than a bargain, and ask what is included or left out.
At the end, take an itemised invoice showing the work done and the price paid, plus any coating warranty and aftercare instructions in writing — file them with the car's papers. Pricing
As of autumn 2026, a national price guide puts a mini valet at £20–£45 by vehicle size, an exterior or interior valet at £40–£90, and a full valet at £75–£200, with a full detail from £150 to £500 or more [4]. Telford usually sits below London and the South East [4].
